Union Parish High School Announces Ban on Student Cell Phones and Accessories, and Other Changes for the Upcoming School Year | KTVE

Farmerville, La. (KTVE/KARD) – On Wednesday, June 15, 2022, Union Parish High School posted information on its Facebook page stating that students are prohibited from bringing cell phones, headphones, and smartwatches to campus.

According to a document published in the post, from May 27, 2022, no mobile phone, headset, air pod, Bluetooth headset or smartwatch will be allowed to be used at school during the day for ANY raison. Students may NOT use their phone during class for calculators, checking the time, listening to music, reading a book, checking grades, or for any other reason. If there is a medical reason to use a cell phone, it may be permitted by a 504 or health plan, with prior approval.

Administrators at Union Parish High School reported that the phones NOT be permitted during physical education, recess, class change, or lunch, and students will not be permitted to use phones in the hallway or restroom.

We understand it’s hard to feel disconnected, but parents can call reception to relay messages to students.

According to the school, some of the challenges administrators face with hundreds of students using cell phones include the ability to:

  • Students take videos and photos of other students in the bathroom and post them on Snapchat (child pornography).
  • Students watch movies in class.
  • Students continually take out their phones in PE and in the locker rooms.
  • Students take photos/videos and post them on TikTok.
  • Students participate in group texts during the school day that make fun of other students and teachers.

Union Parish High School administrators also announced a ban on certain clothing, and students can only bring clear backpacks or purses to school. However, small cosmetic size bags up to 5.5″x7.5″ are allowed for privacy.

For safety reasons, balaclavas (hoodies or hooded jackets/coats), hats, caps and beanies will not be permitted in school. Students may only wear plain black, orange, white or gray sweatshirts or jackets without hoods. The only approved print on the sweatshirts will be the Union Parish High logo or an approved UPHS team or club crest. Head coverings are not permitted in any building during the school day by students. A description of the consequences of not following approved UPHS policies will be provided at the start of the 2022-2023 school year and communicated to families. Thank you for your support as we strive to educate your children in a safe and distraction-free environment.
