Ofsted describes Northampton nursery as a ‘special place’ where ‘every child is valued’

Ofsted has published a glowing report on a Northampton nursery, which it rated as ‘good’ when last inspected.

Wallace Road Nursery School was described as a ‘special place’ by Ofsted after inspectors visited the education facility in June.

The report states: “Staff value each child and know them very well. Kids struggling to settle down get the right help and support to build their confidence so they can have fun.

“Leaders are ambitious for children. They want children to be curious, motivated and to “open windows to the world”.

Inspectors found that the children are “very engaged” in their learning and “absorbed” in their activities, welcoming friends to enjoy together.

The report praised staff for prioritizing children’s personal development, showing how to form friendships, spotting children’s interests and teaching children to persevere when things go wrong.

Ofsted has found that there are many opportunities for children to be active and, outdoors, children learn to take risks on play equipment, such as riding a tricycle safely on a slope.

Staff were also praised for helping children speak in longer sentences and encouraging them to use words to describe what they see and do.

Inspectors said a typical comment from parents was, “Honestly, I couldn’t imagine sending my child anywhere else.”

Parents also praised the nursery’s effective communication with one parent telling inspectors: ‘I am always up to date on my child’s development and how the staff will help him develop further’.

Ofsted found that nursery staff are well supported, morale is high and they share the leadership’s vision of ‘putting children at the heart of everything they do’.

The report, however, noted that staff sometimes fail to spot when children have not understood words well enough and that some opportunities to help children learn words are missed.

Ofsted inspectors have suggested there should be more opportunities to expand children’s knowledge of the different cultures of modern Britain.

Wallace Road Nursery’s last full inspection was in March 2015, when it was rated as ‘outstanding’, meaning it lost a grade.

Ofsted typically carry out inspections once every four years or whenever there is a problem.
