Tucked away at the end of a street off Cathederal Oaks Road is the Knapp Nursery, one of the Goodland’s secret gems.
But new owners Celeste and Patrick Burns hope it’s no longer a secret.
The couple bought the nursery on February 1 and they are already making big changes. They brought the fruit trees back to the front, brought in some vegetables and enlarged the parking lot.
“We really want to encourage people to grow food first,” said Celeste Burns. “That’s what we promote first. All fruit trees and berries – the things you could share with your neighbors.”
Celeste said the purchase of the property was “meant to be”. She worked at the EB Stone company in northern California for 20 years before giving her leave last week.
The property, at 909 Carlo Drive in Goleta, graces three acres. In addition to fruit, avocado, citrus and vegetable trees, the nursery includes landscape and ornamental plants, hedges and a variety of trees.
Being a landlord never feels like a job, she said.
“We get to be in nature,” Celeste said. “My joy is teaching people how to grow things and be successful.”
She noted how expensive blueberries are in grocery stores, but that she can teach people how to grow them in their gardens and eat them fresh, “so they don’t waste their time and money.”
“I have to teach you the right way,” she said. “It’s really gratifying. There’s something about nature and your hands in the ground. How gratifying to plant a tree and watch it grow.”

She plans to have courtyards and a demonstration garden to show people how to grow food and plants in the area, which has lots of thick, clay soil.
The couple bought the nursery from the Caswell family, who owned it for 30 years after buying it from the original owner Doug Knapp.
Patrick Burns is a former journalist who also worked for the Santa Barbara Foresters as a coach, California Collegiate League commissioner, and in the restaurant industry.
“It’s a great local nursery,” said Patrick Burns. “We have a lot of space to do special things.”
A cardiologist announces his retirement
Cardiologist Harris Gelberg will retire on April 30. He has worked in the community for 40 years.
“I came to Santa Barbara from the Cardiovascular Research Institute at UCSF after deciding that academic cardiology, while interesting, was not for my personality,” he said in a statement. “I wanted to have a more hands-on personal relationship with patients and benefit from direct efforts to improve their health.
Gelberg said 1978 was in many ways the dawn of modern cardiology, from imaging to the electrical nature of the heart to pharmacology. Modern science offers many ways to improve heart health.
“Santa Barbara has welcomed technological change with open arms,” he said in a statement. “All good things must come to an end, and that includes my cardiology practice. I feel privileged to have been part of this medical community. Many good doctors and surgeons.
Patients will have many cardiologists to choose from to pursue their care.
“People ask me, why retire now?” Gelberg said. “I have decided to retire due to a confluence of factors. I want to engage in new activities while I am healthy.
